Railway Budget 2016-17


Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu presented the Railway Budget 2016-17 on 25th February 2016 in the Parliament with no hike in passenger fare while announcing introduction of three new super-fast trains and creation of dedicated north-south, east-west and east coast freight corridors by 2019.


Three new super-fast trains announced by Suresh Prabhu include ‘Hamsafar’ which will be a fully air-conditioned 3AC services with options of meals. ‘Tajas’ will showcase the future of train travel in India with speeds up to 130 km per hours with onboard services such as entertainment, local cuisine and wifi.
Outlining the Budget estimates for the coming year, the Railway Minister put the plan size at Rs. 1.21 lakh crore. The focus will be on capital expenditure with a mix of various sources of funding in order to ensure the projects are given assured funding. Gross traffic receipts for the coming fiscal have been fixed at Rs. 1.84 lakh crore with passenger earning growth pegged at 12.4 per cent and earning target budgeted at Rs. 51,012 crore.
Railway minster promised that by 2020 long-felt desire of the common man will be fulfilled. The objectives include reserved accommodation on trains on demand, time-table freight trains, high-end technology to improve safety record, elimination of all unmanned level crossings, improved punctuality and higher speed of freight trains and zero direct discharge of human waste.

  9. Will increase lower berth quota for senior citizens by 50 per cent
  10. Four fold increase in advertising revenue envisaged in the next fiscal
  11. IRCTC website to consider e-commerce initiatives because of high number of hits
  12. Cold storage to be set up in vacant lands near warehousing facilities
  13. Elevated suburban train corridors in Mumbai
  14. Ring railway to be revived in New Delhi
  15. High speed passenger corridor from Ahmadabad to Mumbai
  16. New uniforms and training for porters Coolies to rechristened as 'Sahayaks'
  17. Overnight double-decker train Uday Express to be introduced on busiest routes, carrying capacity to be 40 per cent more
  18. 400 railway stations to be equipped with wifi, 100 this year
  19. Baby milk and hot water to be provided in trains
  20. Insurance companies being asked to provide optional travel insurance to passengers prior to travel
  21. Battery operated services for the old and special people
  22. Railways stalls to over the counter medicine
  23. 3 new superfast trains –(1) Humsafar Express, (2) Tejas and (3) Uday
  24. Aastha circuits trains to connected important pilgrim centres
  25. Super-fast unreserved train Antyodaya Express
  26. Deen Dayalu unreserved coaches with water, mobile charging points
  27. Local cuisine of choice to be made available to the passengers
  28. To introduce methods which will help passengers SMS to get the toilets and coaches cleaned
  29. Refunds process to made simpler, bar coded tickets to be introduced
  30. Sales of tickets to be initiated by hand devices and platform tickets through vending machines
  31. Rs. 3000 crore saved in energy a year ahead of schedule
  32. MoUs with 6 states for Joint Ventures
  33. Outlay for railway electrification increased by 50 per cent; 2,000 km routes to be electrified next fiscal
  34. Intension to commence Wi-Fi system at 100 stations this year in partnership with Google
  35. World’s first bio flushing toilets was developed by us in Dibrugarh Rajdhani
  36. 2 new loco factories to be set up at cost of Rs. 40,000 crore under Make in India initiative
  37. Common people have always been our focus

  39. Indian Railways to shift to paperless contacts management system as e-initiative
  40. No unmanned level crossing by 2020

  45. Next year 2,800 km of track at 7 kms per day against 3 km per day to be commissioned

  47. Target revenue is Rs. 184, 820, 10 per cent up from the revised target
