Konark Sun Temple is a very amazing temple in Konark city which is 35 kilometers away from the Puri city. This temple was built by King Nrisimhadev of the Ganga dynasty in 1236-1264 BC. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. This temple is very beautifully made with artefacts. It depicts 7 horses with twelve pairs of chakras carrying the entire temple site. in which Lord Surya is sitting in it. But at present only one horse is left. The twelve pairs of cycles represent the twelve months of a year.
This Surya Temple is dedicated to God Sun and the local people say Biranchi Narayan. The image of this temple has been depicted on the back of the 10 rupee note with the aim of promoting Indian culture. This temple is famous due to the attraction of its artefacts.
