Roorkee is a famous city in India and a municipal corporation in the Uttarakhand State of India. It is also an older cantonment and it has been the headquarters of Bengal Engineering Group since 1853.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee

Engineering College was founded by Sir James Thomsen in 1847. He died in 1847 and in his memory, the College's name was changed to Thomas College of Civil Engineering Roorkee. This was continued till 1948. After India's independence, it became India's first technical university during the time of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1949. Finally, this University was recognized as the 7th Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on 21 September 2001 after a law was passed in Parliament.

Roorkee is a beautiful and important city of Uttarakhand. Students from different parts of the country come here for education. IIT Roorkee is one of the most famous and prestigious institutes in India and is well known across the world. Apart from IIT, the city has many colleges, schools, and private institutions that provide coaching for NEET, engineering entrance exams, and government job preparations.

Tourist Attractions and Spiritual Places

In terms of tourism, Kaliyar Sharif, a famous dargah, is located about 7 kilometers from Roorkee. The city is also known for the Ganga Canal, which brings water from Har Ki Pauri and flows through the heart of the city. In the evening, Ganga Aarti is performed at the canal ghats, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere that attracts many visitors and local residents.

Entertainment, Markets, and Lifestyle

About 15 kilometers from Roorkee is Crystal World, a popular destination for water activities and amusement. The entry ticket usually ranges from ₹900 to ₹1200. BT Ganj is a well-known market area where visitors can find a wide variety of shops and do everyday shopping. Civil Lines is another popular and well-developed area of the city.

Connectivity and Transportation

Roorkee is well connected by road and rail. Haridwar and Rishikesh can be easily reached from here by bus or train. Direct buses and trains are available to major cities such as Delhi, Shimla, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Ambala, and Chandigarh. For air travel, travelers need to reach Dehradun first. Roorkee has direct bus and train connectivity to Dehradun, and from there, Jolly Grant Airport can be reached by private taxi or auto-rickshaw.
