Tungnath's name is made by Tung and Nath where Tung in Hindi means to the highest point and Nath's word refers to Shiva. Tungnath Temple is the highest Lord Shiva temple in the world and the highest temple in the circuit of Panch Kedar temples .it is located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand State. Temple is 3 km from Chopta, small village in Rudraprayag district. According to Hindu Mythology, Pandava (Mahabharat) made this temple to please lord shiva. Lord Shiva begun angery after Kauravas and Pandavas. One thing is more about this place that Goddess Parvati penanced here to please Shiva before marriage.
Heavy snow falls between 15 December to 15 Febuary. White snow sheet covered surrounding mountain peaks and forest which looks very pleasant. But the door of temple closes for winter time after Deepawali. Tourists reach all months of year to enjoy the snowfalls. Chandrashila trek will start from Tungnath Temple. It is just 1.5 km trek route. July to August it become green due to growing of grass and flowers everywhere.
